Back in August, RCA Records sent out a stream of a new album to music press with one caveat: The true identity of the artist would be on the hush hush. There were no press photos, no biography, nothing more than a press release that stated :”I can’t tell you much about H.E.R. just yet but give it a listen.” The cover of the record is just the singer’s silhouette standing in front of a blue background. 5th & Pratt wasn’t on the list of press to receive the early release of H.E.R. Vol 1 so I’m inclined to reveal her true identity, but everyone loves a good mystery so I won’t! I will tell you however, she’s currently hard at work on H.E.R. Vol 2. Volume 1 was released with lots of celebrity fanfare. Pusha T, Alicia Keys, Bryson Tiller, Wyclef Jean, among others raved about the project on their social media accounts but word of mouth from listeners is what really sent Vol 1 to No. 1 on the iTunes R&B chart.

In an interview with NPR’s Michel Martin, H.E.R. spoke anonymously stating:

“I feel like this is the era of the anti-star. I really just wanted it to be about the music, and get away from, ‘Who is she with?’ and ‘What is she wearing?’ I want people to feel the emotion, try to relate to the way that I look or want to be like me in the way that I’m living or whatever.”

So how is the music? Dope AF! The 22 minute, 7 song EP begs to be put on repeat, which I am happy to oblige. Tunes founded with emotion and honestly, filled with her silky tone and deep 808s creates a rewarding experience that we should all invest in. Check H.E.R. out, and report back!
